The Origins of Cannabis Cultivation

Cannabis cultivation can be traced back to the Neolithic Era; dating 12,000 years ago with roots firmly planted into history with staple crops such as corn and wheat.

Moving forward a few thousand years, history reveals various legends of the Chinese Emperor Shennong. The Emperor found that cannabis was a valuable commodity for use in textiles as well as for medicinal and recreational use.  Cannabis tea was the preferred method of consumption in ancient Chinese times.

Egyptians in 1500 B.C utilized various parts of the cannabis plant to treat all kinds of conditions including hemorrhoids and glaucoma.

500 years passed and history records in India using flowering cannabis in a drink they call Bhang.  This cannabis elixir was used to treat dysentery,  sunstroke, anxiety, fever, digestion issues as well as to reduce appetite.

The plant spread roots from Egypt and India, into Africa, then made its journey across the Atlantic Ocean. History then finds cannabis reaching into the Caribbean and Central America and then into North and South America.  As time passed the original "landrace" strains were lost in translation.

Advances in genetic analysis and genetic manipulation allowed scientists and botanists to identify and analyze the plants’ DNA to effectively trace back their original roots.
